Can you use hair dye on your eyebrows? When it comes to a quick and easy way to fill in the brows, hair dye is one of the best options there is. Dying your eyebrows is inexpensive, easy to do, and most importantly, mess-up friendly.

Although you can use hair dye on your eyebrows there are a few things that you should be aware of before, during and after your have washed out the dye. Don’t worry, after you have colored your eyebrows a few times on your own you’ll have mastered the technique.

The key to success is making sure to read and follow the directions on the packaging of your hair dye. Let’s get started!

How To Dye Your Eyebrows

1) Choose the Right Type of Dye

When choosing hair dye for your eyebrows, choose from the “semi-permanent” section. Permanent hair dyes are meant for your scalp and can be harsh on your eyebrows and sometimes even detrimental.

Beard dyes are an excellent option as they come in all of the neutral tones that are in eyebrows. Today, eyebrow dyes are a popular option.

2) Decide On Your Color

Choose one shade darker than the natural color of your eyebrows. This is going to help add shape and definition and make your brows look fuller. A helpful tip is to match the color of your eyebrows to the darkest hairs on your head.

3) Test the Dye Before Putting It on Your Face

You can’t predict if you’re going to have an allergic reaction and the best way to avoid this is to use precaution. Leave a small bit of the dye on the back of your hand for 10minutes. If there are no noticeable negative reactions after two days, it should be safe to continue on to your eyebrows.

4) Know the Risks – Practice Safety

Apply the dye in small amounts to avoid getting any in your eyes. It’s smart to keep a bottle of eye irrigation close by. If you should get any dye in your eyes, make sure to follow all the directions of the eye irrigation bottle thoroughly.

5) Clean Your Face Before Dying

Scrub your eyebrow area gently with warm water and soap. Makeup, dirt and oils can inhibit the effectiveness of eyebrow die. Use a hair band to push back any hair away from the face.

6) Use Petroleum Jelly to Outline Your Eyebrows

Use a cotton swab to generously apply petroleum jelly on the skin around your eyebrows. Avoid getting any of the petroleum jelly directly on the hair of your eyebrows.

Outlining the hair around your eyebrows with the petroleum jelly will prevent the eyebrow dye from dying your skin immediately surrounding your eyebrow. It also creates a barrier to help prevent the dye from getting into your eyes.

7) Follow the Directions on the Hair Dye Packaging

When preparing your eyebrow dye, make sure that you end up with a thick paste after mixing. If your dye is too thin and runny, you risk getting it in your eyes, and clothes, and everywhere else.

If your dye calls for mixing two bottles together, it’s only necessary to use a very small amount of each. This way you can save the rest for future touch-ups.

8) Apply the Dye

Use either the applicator that comes in the eyebrow dye kit or a cotton swab to apply the dye. Start at the inner, thickest part of your eyebrow and work your way slowly to the thinner side. Work the dye down into the roots of the eyebrow hair making sure that you cover all of the hairs entirely and evenly.

9) Leave the Dye On for 5 Minutes

While you wait for the eyebrow dye to do its magic, use a cotton swab dipped in warm water to gently remove any dye that may have gotten on your skin. Be careful not to remove any dye from your eyebrows.

Although many eyebrow dye kits will inform you to leave it on for up to 15 minutes, doing so in 5 minute increments will give you more control over the end results.

10) Remove the Dye

Using a dry cotton pad or old wash cloth, gently rub the dye and jelly from your eyebrow area. Close your eyes to avoid getting anything in them.

Inspect your eyebrows. If you’d like them to be a little darker, start the dying process over again. Avoid using the dye over three times in a row as it may start to dry out and irritate your skin. When you achieve your desired color, wipe away the dye with a dry pad or cloth and rinse with warm water.
